Background
In 1997, the Carthage area was growing and the City needed more capacity at the WWTP. The expansion required facilities to treat domestic and commercial wastewater. It also needed to treat a lot of industrial wastewater. Additional expansions were needed in 2003 and 2019.
Activity
AMA provided planning, design, and construction services. They did this for the first major expansion in 1997. The capacity of the plant increased from 4.5 MGD to 7.0 MGD. Not only was capacity improved, but effluent requirements were met. In 2003, capacity was increased for biological treatment. This was to reduce ammonia. We also added an aerobic digester for odor and installed mechanical screening. In 2019, Allgeier Martin provided engineering services for increasing biological treatment capacity by 25%. AMA also resolved waste biosolids issues and improved effluent disinfection capabilities in 2019.
Technical Design & Features
2003
- Added raw sewage pumping capacity, new grit removal, & screening facilities
- Intermediate pumping with 3 new final clarifiers
- Existing clarifiers converted to activated sludge basins via the inclusion of turbine-type aerators
- Replaced chlorination/dechlorination facilities with UV disinfection equipment
- Added a gravity thickener, aerobic digester, and sludge holding tank to increase sludge handling
2019
- Additional aeration capacity in existing basins
- Installed 10 removable air diffuser assemblies & two 100-horsepower blowers
- Replaced low-pressure, low-intensity UV disinfection system with new low-pressure, high-output system
- Existing sludge holding basin converted to an aerobic digester by installing fixed diffuser system and 3 new 75-horsepower, high-efficiency blowers
- Installed new mechanically-cleared bar screen at plant headworks to protect pumps and equipment downstream
- Installed new SCADA system to improve operational control and system monitoring
