Shoal Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

Background

Growth on the south side of Joplin overloaded the outdated original Shoal Creek WWTP. The City needed a new treatment plant. In the mid-1980’s, the Shoal Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant was relocated to a new site southwest of Joplin. Allgeier Martin AMA designed for the construction of a new facility with a 6.5 MGD average flow and 15 MGD peak flow. The plant needed more capacity for biological treatment and sludge handling. This was due to stricter regulations.

Activity

The City again looked to Allgeier Martin to plan and design this relocated wastewater treatment plant. In 1988, the Shoal Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) was constructed and put into operation. Once the regulations on BOD and suspended solids tightened, Allgeier Martin was again hired to plan and design improvements in 2010.

As part of the 1988 project, approximately 4 miles of gravity sewer and 2.4 miles of pressure sewer were constructed. The system includes three flow equalization basins that allow for cost-effective design, construction and operation.

Technical Design & Features

1988

  • 6.5 MGD average flow & 15 MGD peak flow

  • Constructed approx. 4 miles of 21”- 42” gravity sewer lines
  • Constructed approx. 2.4 miles of 24” pressure sewer line
  • 3 flow equalization basins allow for cost-effective design/construction/operation

2016

  • Added activated sludge facilities, clarifiers, effluent filters & ultraviolet disinfection
  • Aerobic sludge digesters, gravity belt thickener & related sludge handling equipment improve sludge stabilization and land application operations
