Schifferdecker Roadway & Bridge Approach & Alignment

Background

The Schifferdecker Avenue bridge was structurally deficient. The bridge was narrow, over topped frequently, and needed to be replaced. The outdated bridge had been repaired frequently over several years. Increased traffic flow in the area necessitated bridge replacement and realignment of Schifferdecker. Improving traffic flow was the ultimate goal. The City of Joplin required an engineering consultant to design improvements for increased safety and accessibility.

Activity

The City hired AMA to work with the City’s design staff. The team developed preliminary roadway alignments to reconfigure the intersection of Schifferdecker Ave., Zora Ave., and Peace Church Rd. The project included the construction of a new bridge over Turkey Creek on new alignment. The improved geometrics would allow unrestricted traffic movements on Schifferdecker and Zora. The new alignment’s elevated profile grade eliminates overtopping caused by flooding events and improves traffic flow and safety of the area. The project responsibilities were divided into two elements:

AMA provided final design of the bridge, including preparation of design plans to relocate a waterline

The City of Joplin performed final design of the roadway with the input and advice of AMA engineers.

Allgeier Martin was retained to inspect the construction of the new bridge, roadway, and waterline.
