Power Plant Substation to Substation 1 Feeder Move

Power Plant Substation to Substation 1 Feeder Move

Background

The utility client sought to replace aging outdoor metalclad (ODMC) switchgear at its Power Plant Substation and Substation 1, both serving 15 kV feeder circuits and transformer breakers. As a first step, Allgeier Martin designed and assisted with relocating feeders to Substation 1, enabling the removal of the ODMC switchgear.

AMA updated relay protection and control equipment, installing two 15 kV outdoor air low voltage bays to serve 10 relocated feeders. New controls were added for two 30 MVA transformers, including low-side main breakers and a bus tie breaker to enable transformer paralleling. The design consolidated protection and controls into one building using modern microprocessor relays, and integrated synchronization controls for the Power Plant connection to the 69 kV system at Substation 1. AMA also expanded and updated substation schematics and wiring diagrams, commissioning the new relays through functional testing and SCADA verification.
