15th St. & Murphy Blvd. Stormwater Improvements
Joplin, MO

Background
The intersection at 7th Street and Illinois Avenue in Joplin, MO frequently suffered flooding. This was due to Joplin Creek which ran nearly adjacent to the intersection. The area was heavily developed with mostly impervious pavement.

Activity
Allgeier Martin (AMA) performed an analysis of the Joplin Creek watershed. AMA determined an 11-acre detention pond within a city owned park would alleviate the flooding.
The detention pond was designed upstream at 15th Street and Murphy Boulevard park area. Pond design included a landscaping plan that converts the 11 acres to native grasses and trees. This requires minimal maintenance to reduce mowing activities by the City. The plan provides a more natural environment for wildlife and public viewing.
